Menembus Badai (Crossing the Storm)

In a village near of Mount Semeru, East Java, Wu Da Ying was born and housed within the family of Chinese merchants. The village that holds memories as well as builds its historical and emotional attachment, even though he is no longer sheltering on the roof of his village home. His life and his extended family were full of arms and sweat, but they were able to enjoy it.

Their business and relationships with indigenous people are beautifully knit. Wu Da Ying’s ancestors joined the pioneers of the economy in parts of East Java. However, the harmony was turned into a nightmare where a tragedy erupted ’65 -a humanitarian tragedy that never escape from the history of this republic. Racist-scented intimidation and discrimination gripped the pulse of their lives, consequently they were completely isolated.

In Wu Da Ying the blood of the unyielding explorers, Hakka. Armed with determination and desperation, he decided to study in Canada. He hoped, the facial storms into a peaceful and bright. However, it is precisely in this oily country that he faces a new storm, which needs multiple strengths to grab in the storm of life. Wu Da Ying’s life spirit deserves to be an inspiration for being able to fulfill his dream of becoming a pure and creative scientist worldwide. The achievement is so shiny it still did not dampen his longing as an arek (a man) of East Java.

Di sebuah desa dekat kaki Gunung Semeru, Jawa Timur, Wu Da Ying lahir dan dibersarkan di lingkungan keluarga pedagang Tionghoa. Desa yang menyimpan kenangan sekaligus membangun keterikatan sejarah dan emosionalnya, meski ia sekarang tak lagi berteduh di atap rumah desanya. Kehidupannya beserta keluarga besar sarat tanangan dan peluh, namun mereka mampu menikmatinya.

Bisnis dan hubungan mereka dengan warga pribumi pun terajut indah. Nenek moyang Wu Da Ying ikut merintis roda perekonomian di sebagian wilayah Jawa Timur. Namun, keharmonisan itu berubah menjadi mimpi buruk mana kala meletus tragedi ’65 –sebuah tragedi kemanusiaan yang tak pernah lepas dari sejarah republik ini. Intimidasi beraroma rasis serta diskriminasi mencengkeram denyut nadi kehidupan mereka, akibatnya mereka pun benar-benar terkucil.

Dalam diri Wu Da Ying mengalir darah bangsa penjelajah yang pantang menyerah, bangsa Hakka. Berbekal tekad dan nekat, ia memutuskan untuk menuntut ilmu di Kanada. Ia berharap, badai bersalin wajah menjadi suasa yang damai dan cerah. Namun, justru, di negeri rantau inilah, ia menghadapi badai yang baru, yang membutuhkan kekuatan berlipat-lipat demi merengkuh di tengah badai kehidupan itu. Semangat hidup Wu Da Ying layak menjadi inspirasi karena mampu mewujudkan impiannya menjadi seorang ilmuwan murni dan kreatif yang mendunia. Pencapaiannya yang begitu berkilau itu tetap tak menyurutkan kerinduannya sebagai arek Jawa Timur.
